HW Communications Ltd (HW) has traditionally focused on advanced R&D in mobile and wireless communications implemented as bespoke solutions for external companies. More recently, HW has also targeted the transfer of the technologies into its own range of products. ‘Location innovation’ is one of its core application sectors and its mission statement for this sector is clear: - “accurate, low cost, scalable location determination for all mobile terminals”. HW has applied significant research into (i) the development of enhanced GSM positioning solutions, (ii) Ubiquitous positioning - utilising available Wifi, Bluetooth, GSM infrastructure, (iii) Context-Aware location filtering, and (iv) Advancements to multi-hop positioning. (Multi-Hop Position Augmentation).
RDM Automotive Group developed and markets the Auto-txt vehicle security system to the OEM and automotive aftermarket. This is a telematics solution compliant with the Thatcham Category 5 standard for stolen vehicle tracking and recovery. CAT 5 specifies Automatic Driver Recognition (ADR). RDM was granted a patent for the use of Bluetooth devices for ADR. Auto-txt has been adopted by Jaguar, Land Rover as a dealer fit accessory and by Aston Martin where it is factory fitted on all DB9 and Vanquish models for the UK market. RDM is currently developing a multi-application telematics platform, E-car.
University of Lancaster - Department of Communication Systems
The Department of Communications Systems (DCS) are internationally recognised for their cutting-edge work in information theory, radio propagation and mobile communication systems. DCS has developed sophisticated communication systems ranging from the utilities industries to the emergency services. A relevant, key research topic at DCS is Ultra Wide Band (UWB) communications, and the DCS are one of the few UK organisations active in applications and standardisation activities for Bluetooth v3 (which applies UWB technology).
